The beautiful rows of 70 old houses with white walls and storehouses with namako (sea cucumber) walls continue along the former Yoshii-cho Route 210 and the old Yogo Kaido Road, which used to be a prosperous post town, and still retain the appearance of 100 to 200 years ago.
Selected by the national government as an important traditional building district, the historic streets are lined with stores such as Japanese sweets shops, general merchandise stores, and old private house cafes, making it an attractive area where visitors can take a leisurely stroll.
In the Edo period (1603-1867), Kusano and Yoshii were post towns on the Bungo Kaido Road under the domain of Kurume, and the county office of Ukiwa County was also located here, and large landowners and merchants set up store here, making the area a distribution center for goods.
The sightseeing hall “Dozo” is a white-walled storehouse of sake, and exhibits and sells the town’s specialties.
